Unhappy iwconfig dosen't save settings... why?

If someone can help me with this you'll be my god or godess for the rest of my life.

I've got a pcmcia card from Netgear using the 8180 driver.
I tested installing the card on my old Dell Cpx laptop (no onboard nic) using Slackware 9.1 and Ndiswrapper. I had no problems at all doing this. It all worked fine and dandy.

Now I wanted to use the card on the laptop I use daily, a Compaq Evo N800v (with onboard nic) using Slackware 10 but I can't for the life of me get it to work.

Everything seems to go well when installing the driver. "ndiswrapper -l" shows hardware present etc but my problem is that I can't get my wifi-specific settings to be saved. The only parameter I can set with iwconfig is the encryption key, eg "iwconfig wlan0 key restricted 12345..." nothing else like essid, ap, mode is saved. I enter the commands with no errors but as I said, no luck.

This is driving me maaaad! What am I doing wrong? Is it my onboard Nic (eth0) that is messing things up? I've made sure to bring it down before working with the wireless...

Any ideas what can be done about this? And yes... I am a newbie

Cheers!

Yes indeed i has this same chipset with a cheepo card that used the realtec 8180 chip set. One word of advice. Get another card the realtec 8180 chip is crap You gonna fight with it till the end of time. I got me an oronoco card that is the bomb cause its supported in the basic kernel.

My experiances with 8180 chipset

1. Ndis drivrs worked so so couldent set any wireless settings and the system locked up every 3 seconds

2. linuxant drivers worked ok but they cost 21 bucks and i only paid 15 for the card so NO

3. the realtec drivers from there site and yes there are drivers dont compile correclty on my system and when they did they caused a kernel panic.

Good luck
