IPW2200 /SuSE 9.2 wireless configuration lost...


Hi,

somehow I feel silly, as the system used to work well (after migrating from mkd10.1, where I never
managed to get the wireless working)... the story/situation:

Setup: toshiba Tecra M2, ipw2200bg wireless, SuSE 9.2

Problem:

lost wireless card configuration (how? I have no clue!), but it
used to work for a few days without a problem.

At this moment:

at boot time:

eth1: interface count not be set up
(it is set to be activated at boot time)

immediately after booting/loging-in:

+ browser says it can not solve www google com

trying to connect to my office's machine:

+ ssh: hydri star le ac uk: Temporary failure in name resolution

trying pfo@ipi.pip.ipi.pip
+ ssh: no route to ipi.pip.ipi.pip

> /etc/init.d/network status
eth1 does not appear in the list...

> /etc/init.d/network stop
> /etc/init.d/network start
eth1 does not appear

> iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.
sit0 no wireless extensions.

> /etc/init.d/network stop

However, I noticed the following:

launching YaST > Network devices > Network Card
after all the checkup (but not changing anything)

then issuing

> iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions.
eth0 no wireless extensions.
sit0 no wireless extensions.
eth1 unassociated ESSID:"pxxxxxxxxx" Nickname:"myTecra"
Mode:Managed Channel=0 Access Point: 00:00:00:00:00:00
Bit Rate=0 kb/s Tx-Power=20 dBm
RTS thrff Fragment thrff
Encryption keyff
Power Managementff

> /etc/init.d/network start
eth1 appears, it is operational


> route
Kernel IP routing table
Destination Gateway Genmask Flags Metric Ref Use Iface
192.168.1.0 * 255.255.255.0 U 0 0 0 eth1
link-local * 255.255.0.0 U 0 0 0 eth1
loopback * 255.0.0.0 U 0 0 0 lo

but...

+ the computer, is unable to get to the office machine.
+ browser says it can not solve google
+ but in the browser I can get to the router's pages

+ the router is able to ping my machine at the office, no problem!


Doing again

> /etc/init.d/network stop

and:
+ turning the wireless card off
+ connection a good old ethernet cable

> /etc/init.d/network start

now, eth0 starts, and ...

+ the browser can see google and the rest of the world!
+ I can get to my office machine!

route

Note that the other laptop, running linux RH 7.3 wired to the router
has no problem with the connection.

Plus, using this machine in windowsXP the wireless works flawlessly!

Additionally, the changes introduced by YaST seem to be non-permanent, as
when I boot again, I go back to square one (eth1 undefined).

I've spent a couple of days already trying to diagnose and fix this situation, reading this forum
and others, but the fix simply eludes me :-(

Any help will be highly appreciated

You seem to be bouncing back and forth between eth0 and eth1. Are you trying to use a wired and wireless connection at the same time?

Hi & thanks for your reply.

No, not at the same time. I use a wired setup at the office, and (intend to) use a wireless at home. The reason I mentioned eth0 is that the connection to the router is alive. I was just tracing any other possible failure point.

Experimenting a bit tonight, I managed to manually
enter a route (route default gw 192.168.1.1) and it worked (I'm using that right now), but I still don't know how to make the card visible at boot time
(as it used to be) nor have a clue what YaST is doing to make the card visible (to the kernel I suppose).

The most depressing part is that the system did work, but I must've accidentally done something
which misconfigured it.
