i am connected to the internet with my wireless card BUT.............................
hi again
i have a compaq Evo N620c with the built in wireless card.
i set it up using ubuntu community docs. every thing went well the green
light came on and i can use Fn/F2 to turn it on and off.
when i turn it on it shows i am connected at full strength and it
also indicates i have a neighbour who is also running a wireless connect.
my son also uses the D-Link router and he is on line with his laptop
running windows xp with no problems. we are both also wired to the router.
now here is the but.......when i connect with the wireless my caps lock
and scroll lock lights come on and i am stuck with a locked up computer
and have to reboot by holding the on/off switch in the off position.
any suggestions?
rob.
Yup, or then there's some pretty strong interfering with two or more kernel modules..I've had sometimes, though with wireless devices it usually just ends with the device not functioning.
See if logfiles under /var/log have anything sane to say. In any case check that you're using correct driver and that you've removed/blacklisted any drivers that might interfere.
i agree, my first thought was the driver. however the guide i followed
in the community docs used a compaq Evo 610 and had an upgrade for 8.04.
the driver is from orinoco, rt73-cvs-2008062407. i hope that will help
some. i can take physical bits and put them in the laptop but i am very new to the actual software and terminal use.
thanks, rob

first to answer debuser 123. when the laptop locks up there is nothing
i can do with the mouse or keyboard, it is just frozen.
now for the weird. i went on a short 4 day vacation and took the laptop
with me. i have some reading material on it. i did not touch anything to
do with the wireless. when i came home i decided to check it out.
the wireless driver was gone i mean no trace of it remained. i will now
try to use my d-link dwl.g122 usb adapter and see if i can get a better
response. if any one has an answer for either i would appreciate it.

The functionality is in the kernel, not in an application so even though you may not see any response from your mouse/keyboard, the kernel handles these special keypresses regardless (unless you have more severe problems with the kernel itself locking up).
thank you
i have been searching every where i could think off. it just
didn't occur to me to use the whole phrase as a search.
i really like linux and the more i find out the more i like it.
thanks again.
