hwp54g-prismgt, Ra-link, B-com or acx100!?

Newbie here.

Been playing around with these old windows boxes, got a few live distros to work with, and winMe. This Hawking hwp54g wireless pci card seemed very reasonably priced and Lo, it does work, and quite well...
But not under any linux distro i've tried (all live - knoppix 3.6, pclinuxos, Dyne-bolic, Overclockix)

Not very savvy at the terminal, not very linux speak initiated...

So THIS is my question:

Does anybody know which chipset(s) these cards are currently shipping with? I only ask because the linux card list says "prismGt" and several googles have led me to acx100... but a quick look at the devices drivers in Me clearly said "%ra%link"... i also searched my windows\system for "bcm" looking for broadcom drivers and found an .inf with that...aaargh

what i'm hoping is that it really is Ra-link, and that there is a distro out there i can install with these drivers pre-configured, OR at least one with a package manager that would allow me to setup Ndis wrapper with no terminal activity (I'm afraid of the dark (background of a terminal window).

Anyone, thx

I too am a noob, although I have installed and played with Redhat 9 and Knoppix, one of the things that have keep me from getting into Linux has been the difficulty (for a noob anyway) in getting a wireless card up and running. This time I'm determined.

I installed my HWP54G and it works fine under XP, nothing in RH9. I found a lot of info on the card, but, of course, many different answers to what chipset it uses. I had thought I had an ACX111, but when I ran lspci -n the id is 1814:0201 (rev 01) which appears to be Ralink RT2500.

Ralink has Linux drivers for the RT2500 here , broken down by many different distros, and it appears you will have to compile the driver.

There is a SourceForge project for the RT2400/2500 here.

If it turns out you have the ACX100 (id 104c:8400 or 104c:8401) or ACX111 (id 104c:9066), there is an excellent guide here that will take you through step by step.

I have also seen reports that the hwp54g uses a prism54 chipset.

I'm going to hold off trying to install the RT2500 driver until I overwrite my brand new RH9 installation with Fedore Core 3. Who knows? Maybe FC3 will find the card!

Good luck. I will report back on my progress.

hmmm

To answer your question, it could be any of the 3 chipsets.
As root:
#lspci

This should tell you the chipset if it is a PCI card. However, you mentioned ralink in Windows, so this will confirm that.

Here is a website for rt2500:
http://rt2x00.serialmonkey.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

Redhat 9 default kernel maynot have the drivers/capability. Check documentation to see if it requires a kernel version or higher.

terrible thread so far, eh?

This is my first visit back since the first few days after my post when i was too impatient...ie, decided to return the card...

Rt2500 was definitely the one. I am now the proud owner of an older prism 2 card, fully working and satisfactory. I use an adaptor for pcmcia to pci for an old 366mhz 440bx w/256m...currently unhappy with both ME and 98se fully updated. I also have a 333mhz on the same type board and a thinkpad 385xd. NOTHING FROM THE LAST 7 YEARS but a few optical drives...

Of course now i can't figure anything out

but i have a debian fresh install now to deal with.....on to my next post!

i brought the hawking back, even though i think it had some decent rf going with it's external dipole extension and all...(taught me a few things about antennae, that's for sure...).
Too bad my experiences with that card didn't lead anywhere. At least i learned something about hardware and support...

Sorry to take so long with the progress report. I have been able to get my card working under Fedora Core 3 & 4 and SuSE 9.3. My reports are at my blog.
