We have an WAP54G- firmware 3.04-. There is no version number when I looked at the label. I was reading the docs for this model. At the advance wireless security there is an option about Isolating the AP, but that options is not listed under my interface. We want to do this in order to enable our guest to access the internet, but NOT our LAN. I assigned an Static IP which was given to us by the ISP and I connected the AP directly to the router bypassing the firewall so right now it is outside the LAN. I cannot connect to the AP. It just give me the private IP 169.x.x.x. thanks for any help!
I meant on your client PC: how do you load your network card? Cause there is a tool under kde named "knetworkmanager". Usually I made the experience that this does not work with this AP and WPA-PSK.
try to use ifup eth0 or ifup eth1.
> be logged as root in a console
you may check the connection with
ifstatus eth0
ifstatus eth1
note that if your dhcp server gives an 169.x.x.x address, this means that the connection has failed. This is a dummy address.
I understand your point edubidu. This may be difficult to explain. All we want is to have this AP in a conference room so that when guest come in they can access the Internet, but not access any of our resources. Also to protect our LAN from others. We have a Sonicwall firewall and a T1 router from netopia. I tried connecting the AP directly to the T1 router bypassing the firewall. I assigned a static IP to the AP (our ISP provided us with a range of IPs) and still not working.
ok, at present I understand your question.
Do you have a server in your LAN?
I think the easiest is to unable network sharing on your LAN and to securize your LAN Folders with a password.
Then configure the netopia router as dhcp and the AP as dhcp client.
cause if you have an ISP, you might not get 2 different Networks. As I know, netopia has the range of 192.168.x.x and is routing to the internet.
Now, if you give a different Network to AP 54G, it will not connect to the netopia, that is at the same time the default gateway 192.168.1.1.
The way you can do is to give to your LAN PC's 192.168.1.x and to your AP an 192.168.0.1.
But I'm not sure if this works, cause this firmware and this AP cannot act as dhcp.If you can update the firmware of your AP and if it includes routing, it might.
I think the netopia does act as dhcp?
If so, it is not possible to have 2 dhcp servers.
I never tried it, but could you connect the AP directly to another ADSL line with another netopia (or linksys) router? You could add a adsl-filter (this is a hardware peace which multiplies your adsl connections)
Then you might give 2 compleatly different networks. You should only be able to configure the 2nd modemrouter for anoter network, ex. 172.16.x.x and give this 2nd router the IP address 172.16.1.1 (=default gateway)
