How do you find the USB WLAN device chipset?

Hello All.

I've got a newbie question.

When setting up WLAN USB devices there are allways suggestions of using either the WInXP driver, or a driver from another device that uses the same chipset.

Colour me stupid, but after extensive searching I cannot find information on how to determine the chipset of my USB device!

And short of breaking apart the device - which would probably stop it working correctly, I'm a bit lost.

I did do a search for the device, and found details on the used chipset, but this was from a posting over a year old, and I wouldn't be surprised if the chipset has changed since.

Any help and some details in a howto would be superb... Or I'll write it whilst trying to get things working!

Thanks in advance.

Dave

ps.

I'm going to have a bash at installing it with NDISwrapper on a Windows Vista driver (that is all that is available from the manufacturer currently... typical!), failing that I will hunt for an old XP version, or try some other games from posts here and elsewhere.

Well, there are a few ways to find the chipset. Try lsusb, sometimes that lists it. Otherwise there is the lshw program which does a good job in general of identifying all sorts of hardware on your system.

If neither of those work, you're pretty much left with those old standbys, Google and the manufacturers website. It is pretty amazing what you can come up with by googling on the card name and the word "chipset".
