ethereal captures mostly IEE802.11 junk

Hello.
I'm using the new Ubuntu on an IBM x31 with the ipw2100 wireless chipset/driver.

I've used this laptop to run ethereal over wireless successfully, but something went screwy during this new distro install. My problem is that almost everything it captures seems to be of protocol 'IEEE 802.11' . I can no longer get other fun (higher) protocols like HTTP or AIM.

Steps I ususally take to sniff wireless:

connect to the wireless network via
ifup eth1

switch to monitor mode
iwconfig eth1 mode monitor

launch ethereal
ethereal&

Am I missing any steps or does anyone have any hints for me?

Many thanks!

I don't think ethereal needs you to do this. My driver (ndiswrapper) doesn't support monitor mode and I have zero problems using ethereal.
