error running "modprobe ndiswrapper" in mandrake 10.1

new to linux, just installed Mandrake 10.1 community release. Trying to get Linksys WPC54G working. Installed kernel-sources, removed acx100 and ndiswrapper per instructions on "ndiswrapper.sourceforge.net/phpwiki/index.php/Installation" and installed latest ndiswrapper(1.1).everything went GREAT until I tried to load the ndiswrapper module, exact error from dmesg is:
"ndiswrapper: version magic '2.6.8.1-24mdkcustom 686 gcc-3.4' should be '2.6.8.1-24mdk 686 gcc-3.4' ". this looks like a kernel issue to me but I am new so what do I know. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm betting you downloaded the wrong kernel source. Did it myself, but don't remember the exact error message. First do

uname -r

That will tell you exactly what kernel you are running. According to above your kernel source is 'blahblah-24dmk' or 'blahblah-24mdkcustom'. If the uname output does not match exactly to your kernel source version, you have mistakenly installed the wrong source. http://rpmfind.net/ will have the one you want. Then you'll just have to recompile ndiswrapper.

Don't know what to tell you if that's not the case.

By the way, why did you choose Community over Official?

thx for the reply. I checked both my kernel ver and my kernel source ver and they match. I think the dmesg is stating that the ndiswrapper module has the wrong ver stored in a file so it cant find the correct kernel source to use. tried reinstalling ndiswrapper and ended up with the same results, not sure what i did wrong.
by the way dont you have to purchase the official disto? i am not ready to pay for a distro unless i try it out first.

Hmm... I won't be much help on the ndiswrapper problem then, if that's not the issue.

You're partially right. I did just find out last night that my understanding of the name Official was a bit wrong. Official is the pay version. But you can still download the core part for free. Community is like a Beta release, a pre-release version. If you're interested, I think this post is where I wrote how to get to the download mirrors.

I wonder how many people stay away from Mandrake because they make it look like payment is necessary?

yeah i am not sure how to fix it, i guess i will just keep on googlin! also that link that you listed in one of your other forums is the same link i used to download my 10.1 and I checked into it and it looks like the only diff is some additional software like acrobat that comes bundled in the official. well thx for trying to solve my issue.
