Do I use iwlist, iwconfig, etc. with 2.6 kernel, or are those only for 2.4 kernels

Hello.

I have a Linovo 3000 G530 laptop that I recently purchased (and LOVE) that I dual-boot with Vista/Slack 12.2. I am trying to get wireless working and really don't have much of a clue (since I've always used Linux with ethernet only on my desktop). Anyways, I installed the Broadcom Linux driver that they came out with recently and followed their directions in their README.txt file and after 'insmod'ing' the new 'wl.ko' module and doing 'iwlist eth1 scanning' I see some "WAP's" along with essids, etc. listed (So I assume the driver is working)and then I select the access point I want to connect to and enter --> iwconfig eth1 essid "somename" and then do --> ifconfig eth1 up and nothing happens (no errors, or anything from ifconfig); by the way, when I had attempted to use wireless on Linux A LONG time ago, I remember that after issuing "ifconfig eth1 up" it would wait for seconds to whatever to connect to the point before returning me to the prompt, so I'm assuming ifconfig is not working correctly or something. Am I going about connecting the right way for a 2.6.27.7 kernel, or are these iwlist, and iwconfig commands only meant to be used on 2.4 kernels? Like I said, the 'iwlist' command is listing access points, I just have no clue as to how to actually connect to a point. Any help appreciated.

These are the commands I'm presently issuing that aren't working:

as root:

iwlist eth1 scanning
iwconfig eth1 essid "some essid I selected from the list"
ifconfig eth1 up

NOTHING

Thanks

Kwifimanager will show wether your up or not and if you have an AP

iwconfig with no options will show the wirless device and wether it's asosheated with a ESSID or not if it's showing the ESSID you want but no AP (acses point) check iwlist scan to get it and do -- iwconfig eth1 ap theacsespoint commit ....some cards dont suport the commit part so if it complans omit that part. then if all that took do dhcpcd eth1 to get a IP I usualey do this with Kwifimanager and a console together so I can see the AP and stuff apear in the Kwifimanager window as it hapens ifconfig is onley good for bringing the card up if it isent ifconfig with no options will show onley that witch is up.

O and my Kernel is 2.6.24.7

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU VINNYWRITE!!!! I GOT IT WORKING !!!

I was missing the 'dhcpcd eth1' command to connect (shows how much I know about getting wireless going).

Anyways, thanks again. Just for anyone who happens to have the bcm4312 802.11b/g wireless adapter here's what I did to get it working (In slackware 12.2, although I think this would work under most any distro):

First, I downloaded Broadcom's new Linux driver for this adapter (I think it's open source, since it has a '/src' directory with .c and .h header files). I installed this driver by reading the README.txt after you untar (EASY installation).

Then as root you do:

modprobe ieee80211_crypt_tkip (if it's not built into your kernel)
and then ---> insmod wl.ko from within the directory that it's in (this loads the Broadcom Linux driver module).

Then make sure if you have a wireless switch on your laptop that it's 'on'.

Then do:

iwlist eth1 (if that's your wireless interface) scanning | less

iwconfig eth1 essid "whatever_access_point"

Do --> iwconfig (to see if it's got the access point)

Then do ---> dhcpcd eth1 (to get the ip) (light on laptop should go solid)

That's it!! You're connected!! Yay!

ifconfig eth1 down (to shut down the connection)
