THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU VINNYWRITE!!!! I GOT IT WORKING !!!
I was missing the 'dhcpcd eth1' command to connect (shows how much I know about getting wireless going).
Anyways, thanks again. Just for anyone who happens to have the bcm4312 802.11b/g wireless adapter here's what I did to get it working (In slackware 12.2, although I think this would work under most any distro):
First, I downloaded Broadcom's new Linux driver for this adapter (I think it's open source, since it has a '/src' directory with .c and .h header files). I installed this driver by reading the README.txt after you untar (EASY installation).
Then as root you do:
modprobe ieee80211_crypt_tkip (if it's not built into your kernel)
and then ---> insmod wl.ko from within the directory that it's in (this loads the Broadcom Linux driver module).
Then make sure if you have a wireless switch on your laptop that it's 'on'.
Then do:
iwlist eth1 (if that's your wireless interface) scanning | less
iwconfig eth1 essid "whatever_access_point"
Do --> iwconfig (to see if it's got the access point)
Then do ---> dhcpcd eth1 (to get the ip) (light on laptop should go solid)
That's it!! You're connected!! Yay!
ifconfig eth1 down (to shut down the connection)
