need help troubleshooting connection

I was able to configure my network card to use my router using the SSID.
When I do a iwconfig, I can see the MAC address from the router so I know that the card did communicate with the router.
I configured a static IP with my router as default gateway.
I can ping the local IP but I can't ping my gateway (router)
Not sure what the next step would be in troubleshooting that problem.

can anyone help me?

I've had same problem, can't connect either statically or using dhcp. Sometimes it'll randomly connect but very rarely and it doesn't last long.

iwlist scan returns about 7 wireless networks, including mine, so it looks like there is something hapenning

My interface file for wlan0 looks like this:

auto wlan0
iface wlan0 inet static
address 192.168.1.110
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.1
broadcast 192.168.1.255
network 192.168.1.0

which ip does your router have?
can you connect to it with a wire?
is it set up with dhcp?
post the output of iwlist scan (the part about your router).
best thing will be to set it up with dhcp.

this is all you will need in the interfaces file:

Code:
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
then type

Code:
ifup wlan0

The router works because I am connected to it with 2 other computers, one with a cable and one with a wireless card (both running Win XP).

My router is configured to support DHCP which the other 2 computers use but when I tried it with my laptop, it didn't work. When I do ifup wlan0, I get a bunch of messages saying that the IP length disagrees with bytes received. This is why I was trying to get it to work first with a static IP.

Do you know what the "IP length disagrees..." message means?

THanks
