Unhappy D-Link DWL-G122 and LTSP.....help!!

I have successfully setup LTSP on my server and am able to connect with my Laptop via the NIC built-in.

This is all cool, but not really what I want.

The laptop is a Compaq Presario 1880 (PIII). Unfortunately the hard disk is knackered, so I thought I would use it as a thin client. As I mentioned above this works fine over a wired connection. What I really want is to be able to connect my laptop using a D-Link DWL-G122 USB Wireless NIC.

I have had the D-Link DWL-G122 setup on the server and all is well there. I used the RALINK native linux driver, as opposed to the ndiswrapper option. This works great.

I use a network boot ROM on floppy provided by rom-o-matic to kickstart the network connection to the DHCP server, get the kernel via the network etc...

I need to be able to kickstart the D-Link DWL-G122 to make the connection. How do I do this? I assume I have to build USB, wireless and the RALINK driver into the LTSP kernel, but being new to linux, I don't know how to do this.

There is a wireless package for LTSP (ltsp_wireless), but I don't think it supports UBS NIC.

By the way, I run Fedora Core 4 on the server ( which is also the DHCP server.)
All help will be greatly appreciated.

Even I am trying to make my DWL-G122 work with my fedora core 4 on my desktop. Tried fooling around with ndiswrapper, but couldn't get it done. You mentioned here you made it work with RALINK withough ndiswrapper ? Can you please let me know how you did that ? I am very new to Linux and would need step by step instructions.

rt2570

Download the rt2570 driver from the ralink site or from serial monkey.

Extract the tarball to any directory. cd to the sub-directory called Module.

then enter 'make'

then 'make install'

The module , called rt2570.ko, will be placed in /lib/modules/<your-kernel-ver>/extra.

It needs to be moved to /lib/modules/<your-kernlel-ver>/drivers/net/wireless.

The I ran 'modprobe rt2570' to load the module.

Then you run 'iwconfig' you should see the rausb0 network adapter.

run the following:

iwconfig rausb0 essid youressid
iwconfig rausb0 rate auto
iwconfig rausb0 mode managed

then

ifconfig rausb0 192.168.1.100 (choose your preferred IP here)
ifconfig rausb0 netmask 255.255.255.0

then

inconfig rausb0 up

this should now be working. It's all I can tell you so far. Good luck.

I don; know how to enable this all at boot up. I am trying to create a boot disk that does this all, but I don't know how. When I ask the question it seems peoples answer with the qquestion I asked.

I will smash it up before long.

Where are all the linux experts. I thought linux was supposed to be easy. If I knew it would take this long to sort out this problem I may never have bothered. Linux may be free but how many books do you have to buy to learn it?

Are you Gentoo, Red Hat, Debian, SuSe...

In other words, what flavor of Linux are you wanting to enable the interface at boot up?

For Gentoo:

ln -s net.lo net.rausb0
rc-update add net.rausb0 default
rc-update -s | grep net
-fins-

For Debian:

ifconfig - and look for rausb0

if not, try

ifconfig rausb0 up

If successful:

vi /etc/network/interfaces

and added the line:

auto rasusb0

I know Gentoo and *BSD, but Debian is the result of http://www.google.com...

Good Luck,

Neo
