hi all
I have a WG311 and red hat 9. I got the madWiFi drivers and i tried to get the card working but didn't manage it. Its about time for me to try a new distro now so I figure i'll just use a new distro which definately supports the wg311 (without kernal recompiles etc).

Basically can anyone give me their assurance they have the (wireless) wg311 working and with which distro. Also i am a newbie so if it is working on more than one distro, please recommend me the easiest to configure.

Same problem RedHat9 with WG311, didn't get the dis, but looking for RPMs since I am a newbie!

I am fairly new to Linux as well and I have tried 4 or 5 distros myself. I have found that Mandrake is theeasiest to learn on and also the easiest for wireless.

I just bought a WG311 a couple of days ago. I'm a bit concerned I did the wrong thing as it appears to have a Texas Instruments chip. It shows up with 'lspci' command as

01:09.0 Network controller: Texas Instruments: Unknown device 9066

What do other people see? I'm concerned that Netgear have switched hardware without changing the model number. Looking closely I see this is actually labelled 'WG311 v2'.

I'm just about to see if I can get the madwifi driver working.

If you have v2 of the Netgear WG311 card it looks like you are stuffed, linux-wise. If you are having trouble with your WG311 check the small print on the box for a 'v2', look for the TI chip on the card itself, or check the output of 'lspci'.

well actually i got the wg311 working fine on slackware, there is some issue with the WEP but it doesn't seem to work in windows either. Other people have got the card working in fedora, in fact wtango, switch to fedora, if u r a newbie its very hard to get this card going in redhat.

I've got Mandrake 10 and a working wg311 card (have got problems with it loosing contact with access point, but that's an other question). In order to get it to work I got help from MandrakeExpert since I bought the Discovery 10.

SimplyMepis is an excellent debian based live CD distro similar to Knoppix -- see info at www.distrowatch.com. The Netgear WG311NA card which is based on the Texas Instruments ACX111 chip like the WG311v2 card installed as follows:

working as root "lspci" shows the card is there. I had to use ndiswrapper and the Windows XP drivers that came with the card. Ignore the "driver added but Hardware NOT present!" error message after typing "ndiswrapper -i /home/myself/wg311v2.inf" - it works anyway. Then use MEPIS System Center -> Network Interfaces -> wlan0 tab to install dhcp or a static address. finally type ndiswrapper -m if the card works. The INSTALL or README file in the tar package for the latest downloaded ndiswrapper had instructions for ndiswrapper but the version that came with Simplymepis 8/04 worked as above.

Other issues with Mepis that were not a problem with Knoppix:

Sound volume was turned off at startup. Typing as root "amixer set Master 100 unmute" turned on sound perfectly w/o adjustment and got realplayer working. The ALSA-mini-HOWTO is helpful.

keyboard numlock did not function after installation if simplyMEPIS was installed with defkeybd. Under MEPIS System Center -> System Tweaks -> keyboard choose "us" That worked for a 104 key standard windows keyboard.

I have just installed "ProMepis 2005.b03" and my Netgear 311v2 worked out of the box without needing ndiswrapper or Madwifi. I haven't tried WEP yet though.
I was about to bin this PCI card as I had tried half a dozen distros and about every sugestion posted in user forums....none worked for me... there was always one more tweak to go... I just lost heart and thought the cost of a new card would be cheaper than all this agro. So congrats to Warren at Mepis

Netgear wg311 works good with SUSE 9.1. The graphic installer detected it and I only had to enter my ESSID in a field I found after I clicked around a little bit during installation. No problems at any time after that.
