Airsnort Error "could not set monitor mode"

I am running airsnort on my Dell I8500 with a SMC eliteconnect 200MW 802.11.b card using the prism 2.5 chipset. I can browse the net with it just fine but after installing airsnort I will try to run airsnort and get a "could not set monitor mode" error. Anyone know how I can fix this issue???

you need to put the card into promisc mode so that it can monitor or *sniff* traffic.

i know with the orinoco card i have (dell truemobile 1150 series) there are patched drivers that gentoo's pcmcia-cs provide by default.

however on redhat, i had to go online and search for the patched drivers and install them separately.

it is possible your drivers can't support monitor mode and hopefully there are patched drivers out there for you.

Ok so I went to the snort website again and found the drivers they have there own drivers, and a patch. If I install there drivers do I have to remove the driver I already have, or will those drivers overwrite the existing driver. Or could I just patch the drivers I already have???

Thanks,

root

Hi
I know this is an old thread but i find
that running airsnort as root avoids the
error you were complaining about.Just a suggestion.
