Hi, all! I'm having a lot of problems with my wireless internet device. There's a hotspot where I live (or someone with an open network) but I can't seem to log on to it.

iwconfig, ifconig and friends all recognize the device, as does dhcpcd. The only snag I see so far is that dhcpcd times out saying that it can't get a response from the server.

I don't have the output of above programs handy to paste here, I'm at the college library and not home. I'll make a point to copy the output next time I can.

the device is, as I said, an Airlink 101 USB adapter, using the zd1211b driver. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

Even though the signal appears to be open, it may be configured with MAC filtering. Meaning only NIC's listed in the access table are permitted a connection.

1 - how do I check if this is the case,
2 - if this is indeed the case, how do I correct it to accept all connections?

Keep in mind it's only a guess. Probably should test using a known access point.
With that said, seems to me best way to learn about that signal is to try and figure out who owns it and ask them. What's the SSID?

afaik, it's an open one. But I didn't really ask the people who were hopping online themselves... they just said they were able to find an open network with a great connection. That would logically imply no (e)ssid, and no encryption, naturally, would it not?

I have a feeling I should be using wifi radar somehow, but I'd have no clue where to start, and the problem may still be mis-configured hardware, correct?
