Setup VMWare hard disks on a guets to hold certain Linux Directories

I'm currently in the process of building out a virtual RHEL 5 server to host an Oracle database.

Oracle has recommended for best performance that where the database lives, /opt, have it own hard disk on the VM (say Hard Disk 2). Then say /var/log/messages would have its own hard disk on that VM (say Hard Disk 3). It addition to data and flash memory having its own hard disks space.

I was talking with our vmware admin and he was saying that typically on the Windows side of the house, is how they do it.

I've Googled around for documentation on how to do this and don't see anything.

Was wondering if anyone could make any possible recommendations.

thanks

Almost every vm can use a physical disk. Some are more easy to do than others.
Not sure exactly if a physical dedicated disk would be faster than a virtual hard drive that consumed an entire disk as a side note.

If you have a vmware admin then they should be able to use nearly the exact means to mount a physical disk to a vm as they'd do in windows.

Other notes might be to question why not use Oracle linux (I know it is a clone of rh)?

Also exactly which vmware product are you using?

Give Virtual Box a try.
It runs great on my CentOS machine.-

Read the manual or it could be incredibly frustrating to set up.

Good luck:-
