Reboot and display problems after installing VB Guest Add-Ons

I have Debian running on my VB and installed guest-addons.

Prior to installing, the VM screen would just be the small window surrounded with black.

After checking threads in this forum, I found out that this can be solved by installing guest-addons.

Now, after installing guest-addons I have two problems.

1. The screen size is bigger BUT does not fit into full screen.
2. when using shutdown -r now it stops at the line

Code:
stopping portman daemon
and doesn't continue after that. The VM works fine after I stop it using the power-off signal.

What can be done to rectify these issues?
