Non bootable image for a virtual machine

Hi all,

I'm using the lguest hypervisor for academical purposes.
Because lguest is paravirtualization hypervisor it accepts as an argument a kernel to boot with.
I would like to know how to create a non bootable root fs image of a well known distribution, as I need some basic utilities as gcc and gdb.

Thank you and best regards,

Eviatar Khen
