Can I virtualize 20 Linux machines into one? What will I need/use?


HI Team,

Is there anybody who can help me to get some idea about virtualization on Linux.I have around 20 machines; all of them running on linux boxes,as a part of cost cutting i need to make one Linux box with Virtulization application which can accomadate my 20 linux box in that.

To run 20 machines, depending on their particular workload, you will require on that single machine
- enough CPU cores
- enough disk spindles (I suggest you use a SAN) and a proper RAID controller
- enough NICs to aggregate in case networking is a bottleneck, plus a switch that will support LA
- preferably a second host, to eliminate a SPF created by running all your machines on a single piece of hardware

It doesn't surprise me that over 50% of the responses so far to the poll chose VirtualBox.

If I were you, I would go there and grab an .rpm or .deb, install it, install at least one guest OS and start seeing how it meets your needs.

It's pretty polished so many things are obvious or can be easily figured out. If not, then there is this forum plus there own.
