zmodem transfer

I need to download an ascii file from a symbol handheld. It does an zmodem transfer to the serial port. I have tried using the rz command, but I can't get it to work.
From what I can tell the rz command only works if the sending host is using sz. Does anyone know if this is the case?
Also rz doesn't let me specify what serial port I am using. Is there another app that I should be using to transfer this file besides rz?

All my googling returns how to transfer files with minicom or picocom, but I am not logging in to the handheld, I just want to download a ascii file.

Any thoughts would be helpful.

I think rz works with stdin, so it has to be run inside a terminal program.
I like ckermit, once installed and running ckermit, type ...
set port /dev/ttyS0
set speed 9600 { or whatever }
set flow none
set carrier off
receive /protocol:zmodem
then initiate the transfer on your handheld and it should receive the file.
