after running YUM update for the first time on one of my RH9 b oxes it had a rather long list, then stated nothing done.
is there a command in yum to not only find what needs to be updated, dependancies, but to also download, and go ahead and install everything that is in need of an update?
i know yum install filename, but i am talking hundreds of things that need to be updated here not just a small list.
"yum update" will update any packages that need to be updated. Your box must have been up-to-date with the repos you have in yum.conf. Had you been keeping it updated with up2date or apt?
As it checks the repos, it prints out the big long list of packages that are available. It downloads the headers for all the packages on the repos, and matches the packages against what is installed on your box. If there is nothing newer on the repos, then it doesn't download / install any packages.
awsome thanks. no what i did was go out and get all of the RPMs i could find for it (i built this box after RH dropped support) and just did a rpm -Uvh *.rpm on my system. it grabed everything and upgraded all packages in a few sec.
so if i understand you correctly if i yum update it will pull down and install anything that needs updating? yeah... thank you much.
Check out << www.fedoralegacy.org >>. They are the same people who run the Fedora Project. They'll be keeping RedHat 7.2, 7.3, 8, and 9 updated.
You can also check << ayo.freshrpms.net >>.
If you are going to do a big upgrade manually, I think it's better to use "rpm -F" (freshen) rather than "rpm -U". I think -U will install a package even if an earlier version isn't already installed. -F won't. If there isn't an earlier version, -F will skip that package.
