youtube-dl : unable to set language

I've been trying to get youtube-dl to work, but I get the following error:

2012.11.29

This is apparently the latest version; the version in the repositories is earlier.

Update: I can get it to work if I precede the command with this:

which I simply extracted from a working example that someone posted. But why?

Try https://calomel.org/youtube_wget.html. You can look at the perl script and it seems to work more efficiently. You can download as many videos concurrently as your connection can handle.

Your above video downloads fine.
