It's possible that you glibc is the problem. What version are you using?
See this site.

Actually, it is glibc the problem. Red Hat 9 uses glibc 2.3, and it isn't very friendly with wine...
You can configure and run wine after setting

export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5

and it should solve the problem. But for me this solution worked only half the way.

I tried to install Warcraft 3, and before i used that export, the installer did not launched. After the export, it crashes when starting copying the files to c:\program files\warcraft 3.

If anyone knows what is happening, please help me

Configure using the --with-nptl switch.

I removed wine and installed via apt-get, now I have a new problem.

[root@Redhat_Linux_9 root]# wine
wine: chdir to /root/.wine/wineserver-Redhat_Linux_9.0 : Not a directory

How would I fix this?

If you uninstalled wine and reinstalled, the first thing I'd check is if that directory exists.

Also, for your original problem...I read somewhere that that's caused by something in a recent version of glibc. I have it as well. My work-around is to delete that server-whatever directory...although I want to try that variable suggested above too to see if that works.

You have to do

make clean
./configure --with-nptl
make depend
make
make install

or try export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5
