When you installed SuSE, you also installed a database (somewhere) of all the rpms on the installation CD/DVD(s). If something is greyed out, I suspect it's because it isn't on the installation media.
Go into YaST/Software, and click on Change Source. Give the root password, then wait for the next dialogue to come up. When it does, you can specify sources of software other than the installation cds.
Use
www.google.com/linux to find other sources of rpms for SuSE (most likely, Pacman). Enter the URLs for those other sources.
If you can't find rpms specifically for SuSE, then try finding .src.rpm for the apps you want, and recompile for your box. When you have a binary rpm via this method, put it in a directory somewhere, and direct YaST to that directory (see instructions above).
