xscreensaver - how to display a static, non-distorted image?

There are plenty of different screensaver programs in xscreensaver. However, I failed to find one that would display static, non-distorted image of my choice. There are several programs for displaying images but they always add some special effects to the displayed image even if all configuration options are set to 0. How can I do what I want with xscreensaver?

I did it with xv but it looks like ridiculously old piece of software. Is there no other, nicer method to do such a simple thing? Is jwz here by any chance?
