Xmms troubles...

Almost everytime i listen to music with XMMS it crashes!
Here is what it does:
While i listen to music and use GAIM for chatting suddenly gaim sounds(using aplay) stop but xmms continiues its song. When the song ends and i try to play another one XMMS freezes. Then i look into the `ps -ax` and i see there are 5-10 processes of XMMS running. If i kill them the sound goes normally again. Is there any sollution for this problem ?
This is my configuration:

Debian 3.1
Kernel 2.6.12.4
Alsa 1.0.8-7
XMMS 1.2.10

It happens almost every time and mostly on mp3s, but sometimes it happens to MODs.
I think it is possibly an alsa bug but i am quite n00b at the linux sound systems and i use them only for listening

Why don't you disable Gaim's sound notifications first.
Secondly, try running alsamixer as superuser and see, that perhaps some of the switches interferes with xmms. Usually it's emulation AC97
