Question Xmms Problem

Has anyone ever had a problem with the winamp presets in xmms? The problem I'm having is that the presets doesn't seem to make the music sound any better as in no effect at all. I realize it may take about 2 or 3 seconds before the effect takes place, but it never take place in my case. Any suggections on a remedy. Jeez, my music sounds so flat with those presets.
