Ximian XD2 security updates
I'm not sure if this is the right forum for this post. If the moderators think it is better in the security forum, please feel free to move it there.
I have installed Ximian XD2 desktop on my home SuSE 9.0 Pro installation. It doesn't seem to play well with KDE. It has taken some cleanup effort on my behalf to get KDE back. I hope that Novell can get XD2 to peacefully coexist with KDE on SuSE. I mean, choice is one of the big selling points for Linux. I like what I've seen of the Ximian desktop, but I also like KDE as well. I'm also currently playing around with XFce4.
My primary reason for posting is that after several weeks of using the Ximian Red Carpet updater, I have some concerns. It has become my impression that Ximian specific security updates often come out much later than the SuSE patches. Once I accidentally installed a SuSE gdm security update that hosed the Ximian gdm, and I had to wait until Ximian released its Ximian specific security update to repair the damage. I don't like the idea of leaving my system unpatched waiting for Ximian to get around to releasing its Ximian specific security updates. I also don't like breaking XD2 by using the wrong patch. Has anyone had the same experience as I have?
Security concerns are making me wonder if I should dump XD2 and go with a stock Gnome where I don't have program vendor specific version concerns. Any feedback will be appreciated.
