This is on my gentoo box: I have had xawtv working for some time, but since my video card isn't supported, I went with a tnt2 card. Now 3d works fine with the card, but xawtv doesn't. If I switch the video card driver in my xorg.conf to "nv", instead of "nvidia", then xawtv will work again, but of course I lose 3d acceleration. When I say xawtv doesn't work, I mean that it will start, but just has a black or blue screen, and for some reason it will be missing many of the options (example: it is stuck on europe cable, without any way to change it in the options when I run it with the nvidia driver). I decided to try tvtime instead: the video works fine with tvtime, but the audio is very quiet and scratchy. I do not know much about setting up tvtime audio, but all of my volume sliders in alsamixer are at a good levels. I do not have arts or qt or kde. Other audio things work fine.
So basically it seems to be two separate problems, on one hand xawtv doesn't work with the nvidia driver, and on the other, tvtime has broken audio. If anyone can tell me how to fix either one, I will be happy.
I am not sure if it's the nvidia driver or xawtv or a combination of the new driver (nvidia) and xorg version. But you are right I use nvidia card and yeah xawtv didn't work properly, i am using a gentoo box as well.
everything you discribed (xawtv wise) was true for me eventually after fooling around with xawtv i got some video, by running this command xawtv -c /dev/video0
but my system just froze and had 2 reboot, force reboot.
so I did what u did and emerge tvtime and it works fine expect i haven't found a function to grab images from tv hehehehehe
Hey man I have the same (Black/Blue) screen problem with xawtv, I have I happauge tuner card, it detected the card but I cant get channels for the life of me .
I just entered the command that you listed and this is response I got. Does anyone know what this means or how to configure a tuner card.
This is xawtv-3.94, running on Linux/i686 (2.6.8-24.14-default)
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: No protocol specified
As a kid who has been using Studio MX since he was 14, I would like to mention that Macromedia is _STUPID_ for not porting Macromedia Studio MX 2004 natively to Linux.
It is ethically stupid, financially stupid, digitally stupid, just damn stupid. The world would be a better place if investors judged a companies compitence and worth by it's Linux support.
are you running the command as root? that could be the problem caleb star, also caleb star try this command xawtv -c /dev/video0 or wherever ur tv-tuner is, does ur system freeze?
I suggest you to try KDETV. In my Mandrake 10.1 I have installed it and works nice. TVTime is a tv viewer that was especially optimized for GNOME desktop; when I play TVTime in KDE desktop, the image freezes up after a few minutes of playing, while sound continue playing. This problem is absent in GNOME desktop.
Now, you may know that to view KDETV, there are several 'peripherics' that can be used: Not all work and may cause you to get that freaky blue screen and no sound: if you have a Hauppauge card and Nvidia card like me, you should use Video4Linux (/dev/video) and avoid trying with any other option; maybe a wrong option caused you the problems.
I don't use kde anymore, so for me to install kdetv would require to install a few libraries from kde and nay!, I liked xawtv but for some strange reason it is not working properly
Actually, I installed XawTV with Mandrake 10.1.
In the past, XawTV was my favorite TV viewer with Mandrake 9.2. When I upgraded, I could not use XawTV anymore in this same computer. Actually, Mandrake 10.1 replaced XawTV for KDETV as the default application, probably because of some problems (?). It wasnt the case with Mandrake 9.2 where XawTV was the default application. So when I installed my dear XawTv, I discovered it wouldnt work with Mandrake 10.1. Hence, my switch to KDETV.
As for the installs, It wasnt that complicated but I dont remember which libraries are required. Chances are that you have them installed, if you are using KDE desktop.
In fact, I found KDETV easier to configure than XawTV, so I dont really miss it anymore.
true one had to read and fool around w/ xawtv but nay i don't have kde install nor gnome heheheh just fluxbox untill i upgrade my box i am gonna stay away from those big dekstop environments. i use 2 run kde but dang! it would drain almos all of my resources. gnome was a bit better but it still drains resources.
So then is this a bug? has it been reported? or the question is is xawtv being maintain? hahaha actually it is they've got snapshots of 4.X
Well, using -c /dev/video0 did the trick for me. I never considered that it would change from what it was before I switched video cards, but then I really don't have a clue about this stuff.
The sound problem was repaired by running revdep-rebuild. I will have to remember that one the next time things don't make any sense.
