X won't start with nvidia drivers:::multiple module versions

I'm running Debian unstable. For the last two years nvidia drivers have worked fine, but a recent upgrade and re-compilation of the nvidia kernel module has caused X not to start. Here's what I did, following the instructions here: http://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers

1) # apt-get install module-assistant gcc nvidia-kernel-common
2) # m-a auto-install nvidia
3) # apt-get install nvidia-glx nvidia-glx-dev
4) Edit my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to use driver "nvidia" and load module "glx"
5) # modprobe nvidia and make sure that nvidia is listed in /etc/modules so its always loaded on boot

I'm pretty sure the problem isn't with my xorg.conf file because it has always worked in the past (still can't be 100% sure though). What I did noticed grepping through the Xorg.log file is that there are a lot of different compilation/module versions:

Code:
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules//libpcidata.so
	compiled for 1.4.0.90, module version = 1.0.0
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions//libdbe.so
	compiled for 1.4.0.90, module version = 1.0.0
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions//libextmod.so
	compiled for 1.4.0.90, module version = 1.0.0
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules//fonts/libfreetype.so
	compiled for 1.4.0.90, module version = 2.1.0
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions//libglx.so
	compiled for 4.0.2, module version = 1.0.0
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules//libint10.so
	compiled for 1.4.0.90, module version = 1.0.0
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions//librecord.so
	compiled for 1.4.0.90, module version = 1.13.0
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules//libvbe.so
	compiled for 1.4.0.90, module version = 1.1.0
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions//libdri.so
	compiled for 1.4.0.90, module version = 1.0.0
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//nvidia_drv.so
	compiled for 4.0.2, module version = 1.0.0
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/input//kbd_drv.so
	compiled for 1.4.0.90, module version = 1.3.1
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/input//mouse_drv.so
	compiled for 1.4.0.90, module version = 1.3.0
(II) Loading sub module "fb"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules//libfb.so
	compiled for 1.4.0.90, module version = 1.0.0
(II) Loading sub module "wfb"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules//libwfb.so
	compiled for 1.4.0.90, module version = 1.0.0
(II) Loading sub module "ramdac"

According to the page I linked above, this is a problem and I need to make all of these the same version. Only I have no idea how to do that. Can anyone shed some light on the issue? Also the drivers work fine on a newer kernel version that I have install. So I think I just have a case of a bad upgrade, or I didn't uninstall something before installing a newer version or something and that caused everything to go whack.

For completeness, here's my xorg.conf and xorg.log files.

xorg.conf
Code:
# XF86Config-4 (XFree86 X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the XF86Config-4 manual page.
# (Type "man XF86Config-4" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xfree86 package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xfree86
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following commands as root:
#
# cp /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.custom
# md5sum /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 >/var/lib/xfree86/XF86Config-4.md5sum
# dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86

OK,for start,in xorg.conf use "nvidia" driver and not "nv",then in section "Module" use only this modules;
Code:
    Load "dbe"
    Load "extmod"
    Load "type1"
    Load "freetype"
    Load "glx"
After you've changed that, post if you can start X.Tell me what's the number of the kernel where things work and where they don't.If you know with what compiler your kernel was built, post it,also post gcc version/s that you have.
