X stuck in 640x480 after nvidia install

after installing the nvidia drivers on my slackware 8.1 system I can't get X to go on anything but 640x480. It seems to ignore my XF86config file because the only resoultions I have in there are 1024x768 and 1280x1024.
Is there some other file that I need to edit to get nvidia to work right or do I have to add a modline for all my resoultion? I don't think that I should have to add a mode line for 800x600 and 1024x768 tho.
I'm preety sure I got the nvidia drivers working. the logo comes up when I startx and there were no errors while installation.
If I boot in x using the vesa drivers It can get into x at 1280x1024. Any ideas?

thanks for the input.

There is a good chance it is looking at /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 instead of /etc/X11/XF86Config. This would explain why you get 640x480 when /etc/X11/XF86Config only has 1024x768 and 1280x1024 listed. You could also test if it is using /etc/X11/XF86Config or not by intentionally doing something that should break it by changing the driver name from nvidia to foobar. X can also look for XF86Config in other locations like your home directory.
