X spontaneously reboots

My linux box has just developed a problem. Twice now, while I have been working, X (at least I think it was X) spontaneously restarted. It was not a system reboot. One second I was working, the next I was looking at the login screen.

I am running Red Hat 7.3, using Sawfish as my window manager. The set up has worked perfectly for 6 months now. The only thing I have done recently that I haven't done a million times in the past is use a USBstick to transfer files.

Does anyone have an idea of what might be going on?

Marcus

in your /etc/X11/XF86Config file (or XF86Config-4), check that your vertical and horizontal refresh rates are Exactly what your monitor vendor specifies (you can find it online or in the manual)

it looks as through X is using a range that is decent for your monitor but includes values that may not be compatible with it; change it so that only values your monitor can use are in that config file
