Unhappy X-server won't let anyone but root in :(

After a bit of messing about with my debian installation last night.
totally messed it up, as normal.
Now i've re-installed it and it works fine.

Apart from the X server.
I still have the old users from the last installation and they works fine under a command-login.
But the damned X-server just starts. Loads........ i get the old grey screen and then POFFFF back at the loginscreen.
It's only the users. I got no problems with root.
wouldnt be typing this if i had.
But i can't find any errors in any of the logs and i'm starting to wonder if i shoud take up a new hobby instead of pc,,, something like knitting or?

Help wanted and needed...
I don't want to be logged in as root all the time

Hmm... when will i learn not to drink and configure a pc?

It sounds like a permissionds problem. Take a look at your xfree86 logfile.

Only error in that one is
"(WW) Open APM failed (/dev/apm_bios) (No such file or directory)"

I don't think that it should be the problem.....
I even created a few new users to check if that was the problem and lo and behold?
It didn't help at all.....

hi

chmod a+x /tmp might solve your issue. checkout /etc/x11/xdm.

XFree86.0.log inside /var/log usually has some clues

the only warning is "can't find MTTR" (or omething like that.)
And nope... chmod didn't help...
I got one partition each for /tmp /var /usr /root /home

I guess i have to study the troubleshooting docs more

btw. i'm using kdm as the logonmanager....
