X-server problem at startup

Hi.
I have been running Slackware current (11.0) for two weeks, without any problems at all concerning X.
I also have a Windows partition on the same HDD as my Linux one.

Today I was using Windows, and then rebooted to start Linux. I was going to create a new user, I had decided. Well, as root I typed:
Code:
adduser user
and went through the regular user creation prompts, without any errors. When I then logged into my new user and started X, I got the following:

Code:
xauth: Creating new authority file /home/user/.serverauth.4827

/usr/x11R6/bin/xauth: Creating new authority file /home/user/.xauthority
/usr/x11R6/bin/xauth: Creating new authority file /home/user/.xauthority

Fatal server error:
Cannot move old log file("/var/log/Xorg.0.log" to "/var/log/Xorg.0.log.old")

giving up
/usr/X11R6/bin/xinit: connection refused (errno 111): unable to connect to X server
/usr/X11R6/bin/xinit: no such process (errno 3): server error.

user@computer:~$
Anyone have a clue as to what is going on? As I said I've had no problems whatsoever earlier, but after rebooting Windows and starting up Linux I get this.

Any help/advice is much appreciated.

EDIT: I have my BIOS in MBR, if that makes any difference?

BTW, you can't have BIOS in MBR. You might have a boot loader there.

Just one question: can you start X as a root? Did you try going "init 4" and then logging in as a normal user?

Sorry, I meant boot loader of course.

I can start X as root with no problem. I also tried going init 4 from the root, and then logging in with user, with no problems.
The question is: why did init 5 suddenly stop working for my user account, and what should I do to be able to create new usable accounts in init 5? It would be nice to know how to avoid this error in the future.

Thought I'd bump this one.
Must be someone who has experienced this before, right?

hey, did you ever get this fixed? I am having the SAME problem right now.

The last thing I was doing was installing some software (gEDA, using their installer) which was trying to install/update guile and then I ran out of disk space on my root fs.

I removed some downloads and emptied the .Trash (using fluxbox key to ExecCommand {rm -rf ~/.Trash/*} and the next time I tried startx got the same 'can't move ...' error.

+I can run X as root but not as a regular user.

+I tried adding a new account, changing ownership/permissions of the .log files but nothing has worked so far.

Any suggestions???

thanks!

Code:
#chmod u+s /usr/X11R6/bin/Xorg
hope that helps you too!

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind if I run into the problem again.
I myself made a compromise, and used another runlevel (don't rememer which because I am running Debian nowadays).
