x development files not found during 'wine' installation on linux mint9

i m a week old in linux. i tried to install wine using ./configure and ./tools/wineinstall and i got the following message:
----
checking for X... no
configure: error: X development files not found. Wine will be built without X support, which probably isn't what you want. You will need to install development packages of Xlib/Xfree86 at the very least.
Use the --without-x option if you really want this.

Why are you installing from source? It would be so much easier to install from the software repos.

If you really want to compile it, then install the X development package(s). Search in your package manager for it.

Just so any future viewers know the answer to the OP is to install xserver-xorg-dev.

There are probably many reasons why someone would build wine. One of the most common is called a work-around. Some windows programs will not run on the version of wine that comes from the distro maintainers. Many times you need to apply a patch or two and build a separate wine version specifically for a program or game.

The reason I am posting this is that many people will be building patched wine-1.5.2 to run the new Diablo III. They will possibly encounter the missing X development files error.

I hope this helps to clarify.
