mandrake wont boot up the xserver i get to just about where you would do the graphical login and i just flashes and goes to the non graphical login where you see a crappy picture of a penguin and you have to type all the commands in please help me.
That's where you wanna be! Just kidding (well not really, but that's where I wanna be ). So when it does that (btw the penguin's name is TUX) login and look through your log files. Try to find out what the problem with X starting is. Are you still able to "startx" to get X started? If not, post up your /var/log/XFree86.0.log (I believe that's the file) and specifically the sections that have errors (or at least the last portion of the file that contains the errors). Also post up your /etc/inittab file.
That would depend on how you installed it. However, I think I saw another thread from you, something about your monitor.... Anyway, I think it's a Nvidia graphics drivers problem. Go get them installed, and then see if your problem gets resolved.
the xkeyboard keymap compiler reports:
>error: Bad langth in symbols
> output file "compiled/server-O.xhm" removed
errors from xkbcompare are not fatail to the x server
couldn't load XKB keymap, falling back to pre-xkb keymap
fount transsocket unix connect : cant connent evrno=111
failed to set default path 'unix/:-1'
fatal server error:
could not open default font 'fixed'
so at this point i have no idea what all this means can someone help me out?
heh that's complex, i know nothing about mandrake 7.2, as in how it launches a gui, if it can't fire up X all by itself--normally-- then those errors could be irrelevant, but like i said-- i only knew about 8.2
hey, might you be also using some older XFree86? like 3.x?
