WineX or Cedega, where to get?

Hi all

Is WineX and Cedega the same thing? Do you have to subscribe, and pay $5 a month to get it to work (I know I have to with Cedega, and same goes for WineX if their the same I assume =)).

I've been trying to play Warcraft 3 on my SuSE 10 machine using Wine, but the graphic is really poor (like playing the game on a 500 MHz computer, and I have a 3 GHz with an ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 128M). The installation works fine, but playing the game is impossible, which is strange because a glxgears shows an fps of about 2500. I'm guessing this has to do with how the graphics of the game is interpreted by Wine, and I hope WineX or Cedega can solve this.

5 bucks a month isn't much at all, but since I have a legitimate version of Win XP, it feels like throwing away money for no reason, when I can just dual boot. Although I would like to try a 100% conversion to Linux, I sure would like to get away with it without paying $60 a year for basically no reason.

Thanks for any answer

WineX is free. Cedega isn't although you can get the cvs version for free. But the cvs version isn't as good as the one you buy.
But if you accept warez then you can get cedega for free. Just don't get the 5.0 version because it will only work with the GUI Point2Play and wont work from commandline.
I have seen the best results with 4.4.

Synt4x_3rr0r, thanks, now I know. Where can I get WineX (didn't find it at the transgaming website). Is Cedega much better than WineX?

If you want to dump Windows, then you're not paying $5/month "for no reason" - also isn't the Cedega subscription for updates? Can't you just buy the program up front, and just not bother updating it? That way, you get the program (legally!) and don't have to spend the $5/month if you don't care about the latest and greatest. As long as it provides the features you need when you buy it, you shouldn't have to update it.

Hehe, no need, but thanks a bunch anyway Synt4x_3rr0r =) I got it to work under the ordinary Wine 0.9.5 (I managed to pass the arguments wrongly when starting the game from the command line, all hunky dory now). It works much better now, except every 5 seconds or so, I experience an fps drop (I can still play, but rather annoying when compared to playing smoothly under win xp).

I tried the Cedega timedemo, but that didn't work. The splash screen of Warcraft 3 just freezes. I managed to fix this with replacing the War3.exe file with a nocd War3.exe file, as explained in all the online manuals. However, the problem with the 5s fps drop existed under Cedega as well, so I might just as well use Wine (I think it works because recent versions of Wine have support for DirectX.) I've read that the current version of Wine is just as good when it comes to certain games as Cedega is (among them, Warcraft 3).

As for the fps drop, I have no idea what to do. I'll do as usual, ask google for a day or so, then if nothing comes up, post a thread here =)
