I downloaded Wine-20050725.tar.gz from the winehq and am having some issues wit the final configuration. I have got everything unpacked, compiled and installed. The problem is when I try and run wineprefixcreate, the machine hangs. I can't quit X and get a tty terminal or anything. Has this happened to anyone else, or does anybody have any ideas on where to start looking to fix this? I'm running FC2 with the standard kernel.
Have you tried just running wine at a terminal with no arguments? That shoud do everything that wineprefixcreate does. (basically all it should do is put a .wine folder in your home, and create a basic directory structure) I think that wineprefixcreate is used only in special cases anyway, so I don't think you should even have to use it.
If all wineprefixcreate does is create the directory structure, then all is good, as I have a .wine, with /windows, /Program files, etc. From a quick inspection of the wineinstall script that came with the source, I thought there was something special that had to be done to set up wine for a "windowless" install. If there isn't, I guess I can start trying to insall some stuff (I only want powerpoint anyway. . . and I know about Impress, but the machines I need to run presentations on don't have Impress!).
That's good news Just to make sure that wine can run OK, try running winecfg (type winecfg in a terminal) and see if a little config dialog comes up. If it works and doesn't crash, at least you know the very basic internals work. Just curious--what version of powerpoint are you using? Wine has a lot of problems running anything newer than Office 2000. I've heard of some success with XP, but I haven't been able to get my copy to install. And Office 2003 won't work at all yet.
Thanks and apologies for the delay between my posts.
Wine seems to be working OK. I can run notepad without a glitch. Of course, I was throwing myself in the deep end and trying to insall powerpoint 2003 (and I now realise how dumb that was). I might try again with office xp if I can find some info on how to get that going. Any older and it really defeats the purpose of installing it in the first place. If I get anywhere with xp, I'll post how I did it.
If you need any help installing office xp, try looking at Wine's AppDB page for powerpoint xp: http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?appId=13. But it does appear that it has some issues though. I tried to install this a while ago and it didn't work, but I think I may try again as well.
