windows media

I have been given a small mp3 player made by samsung. I was told it came as part of a napster promotion and would only use napster software. Well I have hacked at it a while and discovered I could use windows media player to move music around on it. I don't want to use windows to do this. Are there any linux apps that emulate windows media player pretty well? Can anyone recomend one?

David

It is a samsung yh-820 I believe

Mplayer is not being sued for patent violations, they are just protesting the potential introduction of patents in Europe. The message on their website is a bit over the top, but they are not the only site running it.

As for multimedia, you can install mplayer as mentioned above, xine or videolan. You will need the latest win32 codecs from mplayers website if you want to play MS multimedia formats.

I have been using mplayer for a very long time as a multimedia player. What I am asking for is a way to move music back and forth from this mp3 player without using windows media.

I assume it connects to the usb port? If so just plug it in and then run the command 'dmesg'. There should be somthing on the end of the output about USB. Many mp3 players appear as USB mass storage devices - if yours does then linux will probably attach it as a scsi drive (/dev/sdx), which you can mount etc. as a standard drive. just remember to eject it before you pull it out (eject /dev/sdx). If this doesn't work then I can't help you I'm afraid.

Hope that helps

It does appear like that. It will only act as a storage device that way. I can't play any music without importing it into the database which is what windows media does.

Thank's for the reply, but I'm still looking for a linux replacement of wm.

Might Help

I know this won't solve the problem, but it might help you. I have figured out that you can copy music to the yh-802 as a mass media device (/music directory). Then you can run the repair software program to rebuild the libary, the music will then show up and can be played. I don't know enough about programing to know what this progam does, but it might help if you do. I might be as simple as adding the filenames to an internal list.

I'm tring to figure out how to easily create playlists myself.
