are you saying that /var/log is empty? is syslogd running at all? is there disk space?

Not empty, just no syslog this file, others log such as messages, secure, etc can be found.
syslogd is not in /var/log location

syslog isn't a file, it's a protocol. /var/log/syslog isn't a conventional log file name.

Yes it is fool, just not as common.

Check your /etc/syslog.conf file to see if anything is set to log to /var/log/syslog

Usually might look something like this in your syslog.conf file:

Code:
# Exclude authpriv, cron, mail, and news. These are logged elsewhere.
*.warn;\
        authpriv.none;cron.none;mail.none;news.none -/var/log/syslog

I think at this point we should let some other monkeys take over the keyboard.

syslog-ng is a replacement for syslogd, standards don't apply in some cases. I did mention it's not as common as most distributions just throw everything in messages nowadays it seems, some people still separate their logs, organization is a good thing some times.

Slackware by the way still uses the /var/log/syslog file like I mentioned. But don't just call it a protocol, back up your facts before spewing out garble.

Ahh, I always wondered what the software i've used and extensively configured for years did! I read somewhere that it was designed to be a drop in replacement for sysklogd using the same relevant files, but what would i know? I would expect slackware to use it, what with it being antiquated and all that. (think i've done enough damage now...!)
