Why is Linux making my fans run more than Windows, 2 laptops?

Title asks it all here folks...

2 different laptops - one an AlienWare M17 (pre-Dell), and a new Dell w/ Pentium.

I've tried 12.04, 10.04, 8.04 on the AlienWare (w/ Vista HP + W7 Pro), and 12.04, 10.04 on the Dell/Pentium (w/ W8).

Fans are running MORE in EVERY 'nix, than in Windows, both machines.

I have NOT observed this on 2 desktops.

I am baffled by this............

Anyone?

Are the laptops actually running hotter?

You can use:
Code:
# apt-get install lm-sensors
sensors
You need the "universe" repository enabled to install this (or something, I don't use Ubuntu).

I would recommend trying 14.04 (LTS) as the more recent kernel versions have much better power management (especially for laptops).

Also, which power saving governor do you use? Are proprietary video drivers installed?
Fans running more often can have many reasons, you will have to give us much more info.

Under Windows are you by any chance running any software that under volts the processor along with fan control software such as NHC, speedfan etc? Whether you are or not you might want to look into the PHC project in order to undervolt the processor. http://linux-phc.org/ There is also fan control software available for you Dell called I8K and dellfand. I8K can handle two fans while dellfand only handles one. You'll have to look around for fan control software for your alienware. Undervolting my processor on my dell laptop is the only way for me to keep it cool on both Windows and Linux

've tried 12.04, 10.04, 8.04
so you are going backwards

the 2012 ubuntu "did not work" so you then moved to the OLDER 2010 ubuntu and that "did not work"
so you moved to the even older and long unsupported 2008 ubuntu and that "did not work"

have you tried a current AND supported OS ?

without you informing us as to THE HARDWARE SPECIFICATIONS!!!

like just WHAT old ATI card is in the one

and just what ati or nvidia cards are in the other
and just WHAT "pentium" that is
a p3 from 1999
or a p4 from 2001
or what ?

there is really nothing any one can do

please post your hardware in the two boxes

I think I loaded lm-sensors there HOS - but I don't remember seeing ACTUAL RUNNING temps? Will try again here...

Tobi - I usually set Linux to run on Max power usage settings, for A/C power. But when I started trying other Linux kernels, I stayed in default settings. No proprietary drivers used while testing.

Arcos - no special Windows power applications. Windows wasn't making the fans power up like Linux was...

And Johnvv - I presumed that only matching software architecture to hardware architecture was critical - AMD vs Intel / 64-bit vs 32-bit. No, haven't loaded 14.04 yet. The Dell Pentium is new Johnvv. I don't mind answering questions ONCE, but answering them twice serves no purpose:

I don't think power / fan management is where to start, but I could be wrong on that; I think driver modules configuration is what needs examination here???

Either that, of the chip manufacturers are sabotaging Linux, like FoxConn did with the anti-Linux BIOS hack a few years ago.......

So you set it on maximum performance and then wonder why your fans run more often, and then think it may be sabotage from a hardware manufacturer?
This is rather weird, I would think.
