Why different binaries do not work across distros?

I know, strange question but I would like to exactly why (all reasons) why a binary compiled for a redhat system cannot work and say a debian system.
I have looked around but cannot find enough technically why.
Also if any of you could post a link to comprehensive information that would be great.
Thanks.
