Hello,
I followed this example to install Java.
There is a web site (http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml ) to check if java is working and it failed.
So I am trying to see how this can be fixed.
thanks

No.

Apparently, you have installed the latest Sun Java JRE. However,
1. Java isn't recognized as a plugin by Firefox
2. probably, Java isn't recognized by the system at all (as "which java" works for me)

So there are two questions:
1. Which functionality do you miss
2. How (exactly) did you install Java

- Maybe
Quote:
# update-alternatives --config java
could help?

For example:
tar zxf jre1.4.2.tar.gz
mv jre1.4.2 /usr/local
cd /usr/local/mozilla/plugins
ln -s /usr/local/jre1.4.2/plugin/i386/ns610-gcc32/libjavaplugin_oji.so

what's up with that?

Thanks!
Well, have you looked in /opt/jre1.5.0_06/bin to see what's in there?

Peace...

y9701015's code would make Sun Java available with Firefox.

However, there's still the issue that Sun Java ain't registered properly to the Debian system:

which returns the pathnames of the files which would be executed in the current environment
I guess the missing link is to make a Debian package from the Java installer .bin by using fakeroot before installing it.
According to my own experience, this will also register Sun Java with Firefox.
