Which Debian for a Pentium 4 HT 3.0 775?

Hi,

Firstly, I have to admit, I am a Linux novice!

I am building a webserver with an intel P4 HT 3.0Ghz 775 CPU. I have just ordered a CD set of Debian to put on my machine. Since placing the order this morning, I have read that there are different versions of Linux distros for different CPU types. The one I have ordered is "The full set of Debian GNU/Linux binary install CDs for the i386 platform".

Will this be the best version for my P4?

Thanks in advance,

Marcus Shirley

the i386 will be just fine

if you run into weird problems, you may want to disable HT in the bios

Is HyperThreading not supported in Debian? Is there any way that I can use HT under Linux?

Yes, but you will most likely have to recompile the kernel and enable symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) the kernel will then treat the CPU as two CPUs

And they have P4 optimizations which are good to turn on. Note that the 775 sockets could support EM64T depending on which one you bought. This would mean there is a chance you want to go with a 64bit distro as well, not the i386, which hopefully you get one optimized at 686, not 386.

It might be of note that your cpu is either i686 or x86_64/EM64T/AMD64. So look on intel.com based on which model number your proc is, and then you will know for sure which versions to narrow it down to.
