Where to put "Program Files"


Hi, im running openSUSE 10.2 with gnome, and so i have the button on my startbar that says more "applications" and when i install new files, they downt appear in that window. which directories should i put the executables in, and the rest of the files too. im new to linux, and im used to winbloze so this is all very complicated to me. Thanks!

/bin
/usr/bin
/usr/local/bin

are all default executable paths.

P.S. This will not put them in the GNOME app menu, you can do that by hand with the GNOME menu editor.

perfect, and can the rest of the files go just anywhere or is there a recommended place for them?

Take a look at http://www.pathname.com/fhs/ if you want more info on where files should go in a Linux system.

Ok, so i read the pdf, and it just confused me more, sorry to bother you guys, but could anyone make an example for installing a basic program like amarok or GAIM for me, all i really want is to see an example so i can figure it out. Thanks
