Where is my memory going?

Hey all, I just ran free -m and here's what I'm seeing:
Code:
root@DebSata:/home/jobee# free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 3548 2743 805 0 88 2442
-/+ buffers/cache: 212 3336
Swap: 6929 0 6929
I hadn't started ANY programs; this is just idling. I did a top and sorted by memory and according to top I'm using 333.512 megabytes of RAM. SO, how do I find out why I'm using 2.7 gigabytes of RAM when I'm not running any programs?

Thanks,

Joe B

Please put console text snippets in
PHP Code:

tags, that way they remain readable.

--> TobiGSD, thanks for the link. I have to admit I DID see it on a couple of Google searches but I dismissed it as something random.

--> Tinkster, thanks for the tip. I've tried some different methods to get some columnar alignment but nothing I've tried has worked. Your edit of my original post made it look like I wanted it to look.

Thanks again guys or gals,

Joe B
