Where can I get safe ROMs for MAME game emulator?

I will be using MAME in linux. Are ROMs still safe to run on linux? ie malware or malicious code.

Do you know any good safe sites? Thanks

Hi...

The only legal ROMs available for download (apart from permission given to you by the copyright holder) can be found here. Please also see the legal information here.

The ROM's that I've linked to above I'm quite certain are safe. I've also used them myself.

Regards...

I appreciate the link, but they don't have a good selection of popular games. I did find a couple of sites where there are many good ones.

I understand there is a legality issue when downloading those games, I'm surprised they haven't been shutdown yet like they did with pirated sites for movies and music. Some of those ROMs sites been up for many years.

Hi...

If you are in the United States, the only other option that I know of to use ROM's legally is purchase old arcade game motherboards and "dump" or transfer the data found on the chips into MAME readable files. However, no distribution is allowed. You can find more information on this here.

Regards...
