What software exists for shrinking mpeg files to fit dvd5?

When I record a film from my TV card, I can't find any software to shrink the mpg file to fit dvd5. There must be something which will do the job! Any ideas gratefully received.

Dvd5

Here are two suggestions:

MANDVD = I have tested personally and like.

K9COPY = I have not tested yet.

Tovid is pretty nice and easy to use, and it's designed for just this kind of thing. It has both gui and command line versions.

Thanks for those suggestions - I'll give them a try. I think the problem with k9copy is that it only accepts input from a dvd, not from an mpg file on your hdd - but I could be wrong.

In theory dropping some quality while encoding should result in smaller files.
Not something I've tried myself.

Before giving up on that dvd player try different dvd formats. My RCA player
does not like +R for example.
