What is the Free replacement for MS Publisher?

[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
Hello, my journalism class is having a very painfully difficult time running off of MS Publisher. To be frank, the entire setup we have (Windows) sucks. So we are going to run Elx Linux on a computer and we are looking for a good free program that will replace publisher. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I know there are Open Office and Star Office, do these have Publisher replacements?

The use we need it for is making our school newspaper. Thanks guys!!!

Pardon my jumping in, but do you know if scribus will import Publisher projects (.pub files, I believe)? The documentation at the scribus site doesn't seem to address this one way or the other.

Thanks!

As far as I know, no. But it does import some formats (OpenOffice IIRC, among others), so you may try and find a "chain of tools" that will take you from Publisher to Scribus. It can't be perfect, but if you really need to get the content, it's worth a try...

Apart from Scribus, there's also Passepartout:

I don't know it, though
