hi,

I have a sound issue that alsa bugtrack seemd to say is "fixed in cvs" but I don't know what this means or what to do to install it, I have tried searching but must be a bit stupid as I can't figure it out. Hope you can help. I'm running ubuntu 6.06.

Not stupid at all.

Check this link out and see if it's any help to you.

I.ve looked at the link but am not sure what I am seeing. Is this a different version of alsa? do I have to remove the old version before installing?

There seems to be a lot to this like alsa drivers, alsa firmware, etc. I just don't know what I'm doing!

Are you registered with the alsa bugtracking system? If not try starting here:

https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/al...login_page.php

Register and search your particular bug. Without a lot more info there's not much I can do to help you and I don't use Ubuntu so I'm not familiar with your specific sound issue.

Also try searching some Ubuntu (or maybe also Debian) forums and posting your question.

I have submitted the bug to alsa and posted in many forums about this issue a while ago but gave up as no solution was forthcoming. Now that Ubuntu has released 6.06 I thought I would try again. And there does seem to have been some progress. I seem to need to install alsa cvs as bugtrack says "fixed in cvs" but I have never done this and don't know what the difference is between alsa and alsa cvs. Somehow I need to replace the alsa on my pc with the latest alsa cvs but don't know how to do this. I have only installed from source a few times and usually just use apt-get or the synaptic package manager but I don't see any alsa cvs packages in there even with universe and multiverse enabled

thanks

Where to start.....

You seem to not understand what cvs is. It stands for "concurrent versioning system" or something similar to that and it is a program that developers use to track multiple versions of a given program. If something is "fixed in cvs" that means that developers have duplicated, discovered and repaired the bug. It also means that the bugfix will likely be incorporated in the next released version of the program; in your case alsa.

I don't know enough about Ubuntu/Debian to tell you how to find out which version of a particular program you are running. I use RPM based distros and know very little about .deb packages and the dpkg system. But find out what version of alsa you are running and enable the "unstable" Debian repository (just for this one operation) and then do an apt-get upgrade of your alsa package. I *think* the command, once you've added the repository, will be something like:

# apt-get upgrade alsa -y

But again, confirm this with a Ubuntu or Debian forum or user before doing it.

Good Luck,

Jim

aah, I see. Thanks. So CVS is a way of tracking improvements made to a program by multiple coders before they are then integrated into the next stable release, sort of like a "nightly build"? I see where they are coming from with this now.

Many thanks for your time Jim, Cheers!

Bingo! You've got it.

Now the issue is to get the newest version of alsa, which hopefully incorporates that bug fix and install that. Since Ubuntu is based on Debian and the Debian "unstable" repositories are fairly new builds of the packages, but actually quite stable, use Debian's apt program to install the new version and any dependencies it may have and you should be good to go.

Good luck!

JIM

well, it seems that I got it wrong and my problem isn't fixed after all, they were just very similar issues!

At least I learned something new though!

Thanks
