If you want really up-to-date software, try Mint or PCLinuxOS. Mint is basically Ubuntu, but with less work to do when setting it up. Don't forget that distros like these, which come out every six months, sometimes include programs that have been released a little to soon. Fedora and Sabayon are also bleeding edge, but less suitable for the beginner.

As for development versions, like Debian's Unstable, whatever people may say, Debian's own description is "unsuitable for any purpose for which a sensible person would use a computer".

Mint is DEB-based and PCLinuxOS is RPM-based. Both systems work well and in a similar way. Most people use the graphical front end and don't notice which they are using. Do not compile from source unless the program is missing from your distro: it's a lot of unnecessary work and sometimes unsuccessful.

That is normally pretty good advice, but OP has expressed an interest in the most up-to-date packages. Most distros take a bit of time to package up the latest version of any particular program. If you demand (B)leading edge, as per yanom, then compiling from source may be the way to go.
